Revolutions

When parts are rotating, their speed can always be measured. Speed sensors which are directly attached to the shaft are usually suitable for this. If this is not possible, other measuring principles must be used where, e.g. the rotating part is measured on the front side. In order to reliably measure the speed in this arrangement, defined points per revolution must be measured. Eddy current sensors, capacitive and laser sensors are used for this.

Detection of turbocharger rotor dynamics

In order to inspect the behaviour of turbochargers during different stress states, eddy current displacement sensors are applied in turbocharger test benches. The miniature design of the sensors and their resistance to oil and high temperatures enable the precise detection of the lubricating gap of hydrodynamically stored rotor shafts.

Speed measurement on automatic abrasive cutting machine

Tiles and special bricks are processed according to their type on automatic abrasive cutting machines. The objective is fast throughput times with the best quality result. Here, the setting parameters for the rotational speed, the circumferential speed of the cutting disk and the feed rate of the movable table are important. The table movement is acquired by a rugged draw-wire displacement sensor with incremental encoder. A digital tachometer calculates this speed and displays it.

Turbochargers

Apart from the angle of the guide vanes, the speed of the vanes on the turbine wheel is important for the performance of the turbocharger. Sensors measure the rotation of the vanes on the face side to detect the rotational speed. Due to increasing material stresses and speeds, titanium vanes are now increasingly being used in addition to common aluminum blades, which presents a challenge in terms of measurement technology. A special linearization of the DZ140 controllers allows the speed of aluminum and titanium vanes to be reliably monitored from 200 to 400,000 rpm.
