In a slitting line, the thickness of metal strip can be measured continuously and contact-free, prior to or after slitting. The thicknessCONTROL MTS 8201. LLT O-frame system uses two optical laser triangulation sensors to perform alloy-independent measurements to an accuracy of a few micrometres. Traversing strip thickness measurements cover the entire slitted coil width, in and across the material flow, for widths up to 4 metres.
The thickness profile of the slitted coil in and across the flow are determined and documented for each ring individually. This makes it possible to determine the longitudinal position of any tolerance deviations for each strip in the entire coil. Seamless quality documentation for each ring means that products can be selected by order and customer, leading to a predictable ROI.
Depending on space requirements, the measuring system might need to be installed before rather than after the shearing operation. In both cases, measurements can be assigned to the resulting strips with various widths.
The new laser line sensor enables special measurement tasks to be carried out that were not possible using traditional techniques (point-type lasers, isotopes or radiometers). Examples include thickness measurement of channelled sheets (base plate thickness and channel heights) and for “sandwich plates” made from inhomogeneous materials. And all of this during industrial production.
