Rocket car to reach 1,600 km/h with Micro-Epsilon sensors
The vehicle that is set to go faster on land than any aircraft in the sky is equipped with 90 cm wheels made of aerospace-grade aluminum. The capaNCDT 6200 capacitive measurement system detects the dynamics and mechanical expansion of the wheels in a test cell. In addition to capacitive sensors, optoNCDT 2300 laser sensors are also used. These are mounted to the vehicle frame in order to measure and control the ride height of the racing car during driving. This enables the suspension characteristics to be adapted and the car’s performance optimized. Furthermore, the thermoMETER CSmicro and CThot non-contact infrared temperature sensors are used to detect the overheating of electronics and other components that are riveted or adhesive-bonded. Motivation for the multi-million pound "Bloodhound" project is a large-scale education campaign. Several thousand pupils will follow the event live on the Internet when the rocket thunders across the South African desert in 2016- supported by a wide range of sensor products from Micro-Epsilon.
