A new high-speed inspection system has been developed for the automotive industry that monitors the quality of adhesive beads directly after the adhesive has been applied during the vehicle assembly process.
Depending on the number of robots on site, the usual cycle time for inspecting the adhesive beads and inserting the screen is approx. 60 seconds. The measuring process must be considered as being critical. Beads of adhesive must always be applied to the windscreen uniformly. Sediment or defects can be the reason for water penetrating into the passenger compartment. As today's windscreens also share responsibility for the overall strength and stability of the vehicle, any weakness in the adhesive bond represents a risk to the safety of the driver.
The "BeadMonitor" measuring system measures the height and width of the polyurethane adhesive beads while they are being applied to the edge of the screen. The sensor head is mounted on the end effector of a robot, directly behind the nozzle.
The sensor can be easily set and configured. Besides this, it is also possible to quickly and easily adapt the sensor to other applications. The scanCONTROL 2710 profile scanner offers Ethernet, RS422 and FireWire as interfaces, so ensuring that the system can be easily used with a variety of software platforms. The measuring range can be set from 10 mm, 25 mm or 100 mm up to 600 mm.
