Glossary: Encoder

An encoder is a measurement transmitter based on optical or magnetic principles. In measurement technology they are for example used in Draw-wire Sensors. Here, they convert a rotational movement into an electrical signal. Since straight-line motion is normally involved with Draw-wire Sensors, they are designated as linear encoders. There are rotary encoders for rotating movements.
